Last Monday, Sep 19th , the Brazilian Executive submitted to the Congress the bill ‘Lei Geral da Copa’ (PL 2330/11). This bill regulates the protection of industrial property rights related to the football world cup in general.
The proposal defines the parameters for the registration and protection, by INPI, of trade marks to be used in the 2014 World Cup as well as any other products created at the event. The bill contains eight articles in which INPI promotes the recording of well-known marks, products and official symbols of the Confederations' Cup 2013 and the World Cup 2014 and also FIFA's well-known trade marks.
The bill also creates a special system for trade mark applications submitted by FIFA and its exemption from fees. The bill will be considered under priority by a special commission to be created specifically for this purpose.
