Brazilian University files its first international patent application

The Brazilian University of Ponta Grossa (UEPG) has applied for the first time for an international patent application – i.e. under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The document was filed on November 4 at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva.

UEPG’s chancellor, John Carlos Gomes, received on the 10th of November the researchers and highlighted the significance for the development of research.
The researchers developed at the UEPG, a product based on graphene (an allotrope of carbon, a material that is 100 times stronger than steel and more resistance that diamonds), which may have an impact in the transport of energy production and use of oil field equipment, ducts, and submarines for example. Professor André Luiz,one of the researchers involved, mentioned that the use of this material “could significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving oil spills, due to ruptured pipelines."
